ALIGN appointments to NHMRC committees
We are pleased to announce that members of the ALIGN network have been awarded membership on NHMRC Principle Committees and NHMRC-MRFF Committees.
NHMRC and MRFF are the key funding sources for medical research in Australia, and much of our work has been supported through grants from these bodies. The membership of researchers and other health experts on NHMRC and MRFF committees allows the sector to guide and shape the way funding applications are assessed, and funding priorities are set.
There are six new committees which have been established for 2024-2027:
- NHMRC Research Committee
- NHMRC Australian Health Ethics Committee
- NHMRC-MRFF Consumer Advisory Group
- NHMRC-MRFF Indigenous Advisory Group
- NHMRC-MRFF Public Health and Health Systems Committee
- NHMRC-MRFF Industry, Commercialisation and Philanthropy Committee
Professor Alex Brown, Associate Professor Odette Pearson (Co-Theme Leader, Aboriginal Health Equity Research and Strategy, SAHMRI), and Professor Doug Hilton (CEO, CSIRO) have been appointed to the NHMRC Research Committee.
Mr Adam Heterick (Bioinformatics Officer, Indigenous Genomics, ALIGN, The Kids), Associate Professor Odette Pearson and Associate Professor Maree Tombs (Associate Dean Indigenous and Professor School Population Health, UNSW) have been appointed to the NHMRC-MRFF Indigenous Advisory Group.
We would also like to recognise some key allies of ALIGN and their appointments. Professor Louise Maple-Brown (Deputy Director (Research), Menzies School of Health Research) has been appointed to the NHMRC-MRFF Public Health and Health Systems Committee, Professor James Ward (Director of the Poche Centre for Indigenous Health, The University of Queensland) and Ms Cheryl Bridge (Head of the Kulunga Aboriginal Unit and Aboriginal Health RFA Deputy Head, The Kids) have been appointed to the NHMRC-MRFF Indigenous Advisory Group, and Ms Cheryl Bridge has also been appointed to the NHMRC-MRFF Consumer Advisory Group.
This strong representation from ALIGN and our allies on these committees is important work, and their appointment demonstrates the respected expertise they have within the medical health sector.
